A THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS

A THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS

A THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS │ CULTURAL ICONS OF THE EAST

Narrative theater, physical theater and music composed of Arab and western motifs. The actors play a variety of instruments, all speaking in Hebrew and singing in Arabic. The stories told by Scheherazade over the course of a thousand and one nights to save herself and the young ladies of the kingdom lead the angry and insulted king and the audience on a journey of adventure, a journey of awareness of human frailty, a journey which ends in reconciliation.

In the fifteenth century a collection of stories written in Arabic was compiled in the city of Alexandria in Egypt. The origin of the stories was from Persia, India, China and a variety of Arab nations. The stories were collected over hundreds of years and the earlier stories were written in the eighth and ninth centuries. Legend has it that Alexander the Great suffered from insomnia and would summon people told "Nightly Story Tellers" to tell him these stories. The words "a thousand" in poetry and myths connote infinity, and the addition of "and one" provides infinity with a lyrical beauty. The tales of "A Thousand and One Nights" have become a myth in itself. They influenced stories written at later times in different cultures and their reincarnations appear in English French and even Hassidic narratives.
